We will be meeting at Mortero Palms N32° 43.215 W116° 08.925 at 8:30am on Saturday March 13. We need to leave at 9am to accomplish the hike before the sun sets. Any stock 4wd should be able to get you to the trailhead.
This is a strenuous hike. Anyone participating should be in good physical shape. 3 miles of boulderhopping with an elevation gain/loss of 1200' each direction.
I plan on camping Friday & Saturday nights someplace near N32°43.312 W116° 08.230
CB Channel 31. Ham radio (2 meter) 146.550
Some things to bring: quality hiking boots with ankle support, appropriate clothing, sunblock, gloves, water / food (for the hike),first aid kit, flashlight, extra batteries, camera _________________ 1996 ZJ "The Black Pearl" 1999 Ford F250
|

Can't make that date (I have too many posts that start like that!)
I'll be pickling my liver out in Palm Springs that weekend.
And doing some running and MTBing. |

I'm going to try to make this. My Highlander should be capable of getting to the campsite. _________________ |

Doug,
What time do you think you will be getting to the campsite?
Do you want me to bring down some ammo cans?
I might get a cheap hotel somewhere Saturday night so I can freshen up Sunday as I will probably stop by the two events in Westminster. _________________ |

Forecast is looking good.
Clear. Lows in the lower 40s to lower 50s. Highs in the mid 70s to lower 80s.
If it is at all possible I plan on taking Friday off. If not I will be on the road by 1pm. I won't know until Thursday as this is shaping up to be a busy week at work. I will post up as soon as I know what time I expect to be in camp.
I will be heading South on 1-15 all the way to I-8. East to Ocotillo. North on S2 to Dos Hombres Rd and into camp. I have been told that Dos Hombres Rd does not have the deep sand that Mortero Wash does. Bill, if you are worried about your Highlander in deep sand you might want to take Dos Hombres Rd as well.
I will take any ammo cans that you want to bring _________________ 1996 ZJ "The Black Pearl" 1999 Ford F250
|

I am also taking the day off Friday so I can get down there at a decent time.
I don't see a Dos Hombres Rd., did you mean Dos Cabeza Rd.? _________________ |

I drove Mortero Cyn Rd a week and a half ago to the RR crossing at the Dos Cabezas RR Siding (NG TOPO map). The road from S2 to Dos Cabezas was 2WD fine (hint: I drove it!). There's quite a bit of train parked on the tracks there, and it's hard to tell from my pix if the crossover is unobstructed.
Regarding the Dos Cabezas access, Im unclear whether you can cross the tracks where the road meets the RR trax, or if you have to parallel the trax NW to the Dos Cabezas RR Siding. If you have to go to the Dos Cabezas RR Siding to cross, Mortero was fine access.

I didn't cross the trax so don't know what the west side holds. _________________ When life hands you lemons, ask for tequila and salt and call me over!. |
